Little Dr. Flu Workshops at Faculty of Medicine, University of Hong Kong

On March 9 and April 20, 2024, two groups of 24 Biology students from F.5 and F.3, respectively, attended the 'Little Dr. Flu Workshop' at the Faculty of Medicine, the University of Hong Kong. The students were led by our biology teachers, Mr. K. C. Au Yeung, Ms. S. M. Yu, Mr. C. H. Ng, and Mr. C. K. Choi.

The workshop enabled the students to gain a better understanding of molecular biology techniques, including nucleic acid isolation and real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Through hands-on experiments, the students learned how to amplify DNA from patient samples using qPCR to obtain data for analysis and determine COVID-19 and influenza viral loads by analyzing CT-value results.

The students also explored the use of immunofluorescence microscopy to detect the presence of viruses. They visited a virology laboratory to see how cell culture can be applied in virus research and vaccine development. Each group had to identify whether a patient was suffering from H1N1, H3N2, or COVID-19 and present their findings with thorough analysis.

The workshop not only increased the students' understanding of molecular biology techniques but also piqued their interest in scientific research.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Michael Chan, an alumnus and associate professor at the School of Public Health, for organizing this practical and intellectually stimulating workshop for our students.
